Il s'agit d'un terme francitan composé de l'occitan tavan (prononcé taban), taon, suivi du suffixe augmentatif français -ard indiquant la grosseur avec une nuance péjorative (le terme occitan correspondant serait tavanas). Le taon a effectivement un vol rapide et rectiligne et se heurte souvent rudement aux vitres des fenêtres. D'où l'analogie avec un comportement de fonceur irréfléchi.
